Installation & Update Errors

This software runs on a wide range of platforms (Windows 98© SE - Windows ME© - Windows Home© - Windows 2000© SP4 - Windows XP© - Windows Vista©) and with many different regional settings (Europe, USA, Canada, Australia, South-America, ...).  As a result, you may encounter a run time error during installation or after software updating, while the application runs fine on another computer and in our development and testing environment.

Important Note:  If you encounter a Run Time Error after successful installation, do not re-install the software !

Here is a list of frequent occurring run time errors. For additional information or for any other run time error, contact the Help Desk !  Your feedback is highly appreciated ! Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience.

All labels and grid data in this software are displaying Italic or bold

Run the following Restore Microsoft Arial Core Font tool to fix this problem, typically for Windows XP SP2/SP3. If you need other fonts for Windows® or Macintosh®, browse to this website.

I cannot install the software ;   the Setup program does not complete the installation

Verify the Microsoft website to make sure you have the latest SP (Service Pack) installed on your computer. Or you may choose to run this former installation program (26 MB).  Download/Save this file, unzip the file, next run the installation program.

I have installed the software, but it keeps on saying  ''These functions will be available after installing the latest software update''   when I click the menu items

Run this MCC Tools Fix Start-Up
(your web-browser may block this file, you need to accept it)

''Run Time Error 53 : file not found''
''Run Time Error 70 : Permission Denied''
''Run Time Error 75 : path/file error''

If this error occurs during initial start-up or during installation of new updates, you probably do not have an Administrator profile. You need Administrator permissions to install and to update this software.

If the application runs fine, but error 53 occurs lateron, you may be missing a specific file. Contact the Help Desk with the details.

[ Win Vista-7 ]
Right-mouse click the desktop icon and select 'Run as Administrator'  (see this image)

If this option is not available from the desktop icon ;
     - open Windows Explorer
     - browse to C:\Program Files\MCC Pilotlog\
     - right-mouse click mccpilotlog.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'

Forcing the program to Run as Administrator, may occasionaly invoke Run Time Error 339 (described above).

''Run Time Error 75 : path/file error''
''Run Time Error 76 : Path not found''

The software cannot find the folder for the task it is running. For example, the directory where the software should make a back-up of the database (default set to C:\Temp) does not exist or cannot be accessed. Or the Airline Interface or Excel Import Wizard are searching an incorrect folder. Press the associated {Browse} key and select another folder.

e.g. Run Time Error 76 - Automatic Back-Up :  Go to the Tools page, press the {Browse} key and select the destination folder for your back-up.

If this error occurs at initial start-up after installation, one of the required subfolders may be missing in the application directory. The application directory should contain all these subfolders ;

- open Windows Explorer
- browse to the application directory, located here :
     [ Win 98-Me-2000-XP ]
          C:\Program Files\MCC Pilotlog
     [ Win Vista - 7 ]
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\MCC Pilotlog     (you can copy/paste these links straight into the windows explorer bar)

If one of the subfolders is missing, you can create it manually. If this does not solve your problem, contact the Help Desk for support.

e.g. Run Time Error 76 - file arial.ttf :  The Arial Font could not be copied into the Fonts subfolder, the Fonts subfolder is missing. Open the Explorer and create the Fonts subfolder as shown here, or on [ Win 98-Me-2000-XP ] run this MCC Tools Fix 1.

''Run Time Error 339 :   component _____.ocx or one of its dependencies not correctly registered''

Write down the name of the OCX component that causes trouble, you need the name when you run the following repair tool.

Run this MCC Tools Fix Installer OCX
(your web-browser may block this file, you need to accept it - you need Administrator rights to run this Tool)

You may need to run the Tool again for other OCX's. However, if the problem persists with the same OCX, the following guidelines may help :

[ Win 98-Me-2000-XP ]
You may need to download the following VBScript file from the Microsoft website.

[ Win Vista-7 ]
From the START button, enter the following command into the prompt  regsvr32.exe ____.ocx /u   (replace ____ with the component name) and press the enter-key

''Run Time Error 429 :   ActiveX component can't create object''
''Run-time error '-2147221231 (80040111)' :   Automation Error  -  ClassFactory cannot supply requested class''

Run this MCC Tools Fix Installer ActiveX
(your web-browser may block this file, you need to accept it - you need Administrator rights to run this Tool)

If the problem persists, the following guidelines may help :

[ Win 98-Me-2000-XP ]
You may need to download the following VBScript file from the Microsoft website.

[ Win Vista-7 ]

''An error occurred while updating the database to Version ..''

Refer to below, section "Update Errors and Fixes".

A new software update is downloaded, but it seems that the new update does not install itself...

New software updates should install themselves fully automatic at the next start of the application. You do not need to LogOff/LogOn or reboot the computer.

[ Win 98-Me-2000-XP ]
If the update does not install itself, verify the desktop shortcut to the application. The desktop shortcut should point to 'pilotlogbook.exe' and not to 'mccApp1.exe' or any other file.
You need Administrator rights to install new updates, verify your profile.

[ Win Vista - 7 ]
Depending on the type of update, you will be prompted for elevation to Administrator rights at the next start-up of the application. You must press the OK button to allow automatic installation of the update. If you have (inadvertently) pressed Cancel, you can force the update again by running the 'MCC Pilotlog Update Installer' from the START menu.

The software hangs / blocks when a new update is downloaded, and requires Ctrl-Alt-Del to shutdown.

Seven seconds after starting the application, the software searches the internet for new updates.  If a new update is detected, it is automatically downloaded.  Generally, updates take no longer than a few seconds to download (broadband connection).  Exceptionally it may take a bit longer, up to 60 seconds.

If the download on your computer (broadband connection) takes more than one minute, one of the following may occur ;

- your security settings block/refuse our files from being downloaded (check your security settings)

- your user profile does not allow saving files in the Program Files directory (Important note for VISTA - 7 users ; you must always run this software with right-mouse click 'Run As Administrator', even if you have an Administrator profile !)

- the cache memory of your computer contains a thousand or more temporary internet-files (you really need to clean this rubbish - go to internet browser and select Tools - Internet Options - Delete Files)

As from version 2.4 you can disable the automatic download feature (uncheck the 'Automatic Download' option on the Tools page).  Since you may not succeed in reaching the Tools page and changing the setting within seven seconds, the trick is to disconnect your computer from internet when you start the application. This allows you to access the Settings page without any hassle.

The software reports 'Searching for latest update...' and 'No Internet Connection available' (Tools page), but my internet connection is OK.

One of the reasons may be that the application directory structure is damaged. The application directory should contain all these subfolders ;

- open Windows Explorer

- browse to the application directory, located here :
     [ Win 98-Me-2000-XP ]
          C:\Program Files\MCC Pilotlog\Database
     [ Win Vista - 7 ]
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\MCC Pilotlog\Database     (you can copy/paste these links straight into the windows explorer bar)

If one of the subfolders is missing, you can create it manually. If this does not solve your problem, contact the Help Desk for support.

Update Error and Fixes

It may occur that the application reports an error after downloading new updates. Worst case, the application does no longer start.  If this occurs, contact the Help Desk immediately !

Even in case the application does no longer start, do not remove/re-install the software !. All bugs can be fixed with minor manipulations !
Here is a list of bugs that occured in the past, and their fixes. If the error that you encounter, is not listed, contact the Help Desk !

I keep on getting an error message about ''File :  arial.ttf'' each time I run this software

The Fonts subfolder is missing in the application path, generally located C:\Program Files\Pilot Logbook  or  C:\Program Files\MCC Pilotlog. Choose any of the following two solutions to fix this bug :

- Open Windows Explorer and manually create the Fonts subfolder as shown here
- Or, on [ Win 98-Me-2000-XP ], you can also run this MCC Tools Fix 1  (your web-browser may block this file, you need to accept it)

''An error occurred while updating the database to Version 279 or 283''

Download the following two files and save the files into the \Support subfolder of the application. This folder is located here :

[ Win 98-Me-2000-XP ]
C:\Program Files\MCC Pilotlog\Support
[ Win Vista - 7 ]
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\MCC Pilotlog\Support     (you can copy/paste these links straight into the windows explorer bar)

You do not need to unzip these files, just save them as zip archive. These are the two files :
File001
File3166

''An error occurred while updating the database to Version 370''

Run this MCC Tools Fix 370  (your web-browser may block this executable file, you need to accept it)

''An error occurred while updating the database to Version 417 or 432 or 435''

Run this MCC Tools Fix 417 - 432 - 435  (your web-browser may block this executable file, you need to accept it)

''An error occurred while updating the database to Version ..''

This error may occur after downloading a new update. Contact the Help Desk immediately ! Please e-mail a win-zipped copy of your database to the Help Desk for investigation. The pilotlogbook.mdb database is default located here :

[ Win 98-Me-2000-XP ]
C:\Program Files\MCC Pilotlog\Database
[ Win Vista - 7 ]
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\MCC Pilotlog\Database     (you can copy/paste these links straight into the windows explorer bar)

If your database is empty or nearly used, consider to replace the database by an empty but healthy database as follows :

         - close the software application
         - download the empty database
         - save the empty database (overwrite the damaged database) in the \Database subfolder, located as described above

I have problems running Excel after using this software. Any ideas why ?

Some pages in this software launch Excel, e.g. to import your old excel logbook, to import your airline flight schedule or to export data to an excel sheet. In some occasions, Excel keeps on running on the background after closing our software. As a result, Excel will not start when you open an excel sheet, just because an instance of Excel is running already.
To shutdown Excel, press CTRL-ALT-DEL, click the Task Manager button, select the Processes Tab, select Excel from the list and press the End Now button. This will do the job. It is never required to re-install or re-configure Excel.

I get 'Error 482 - Printer Error' when I print Graph Charts.

This error indicates an error at the printer (such as out-of paper) or the (network-) connection to the printer. Make sure to download the latest Windows Printer Driver for your printer. Remove and re-install the latest printer driver.

How do I transfer MCC Pilotlog to another computer ?

1-  On the old computer, make sure to update your software to the latest edition. This is to guarantee a smooth transition for the database.

2-  On the new computer, download and run the software installation program :
              [ Win 98-Me-2000-XP ]    installation program
              [ Win Vista - 7 ]    installation program

3-  Start the application on the new computer. The latest version will be downloaded automatically.

4-  If you have purchased the PRO Edition, go to the Tools page and enter the PRO License Key that you have received by e-mail. If your PRO License Key got lost, contact the Help Desk.

5-  From the old computer, collect the entire Database sub-folder, default located here :
     [ Win 98-Me-2000-XP ]
          C:\Program Files\MCC Pilotlog
     [ Win Vista - 7 ]
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\MCC Pilotlog     (you can copy/paste these links straight into the windows explorer bar)

6-  Paste this folder into the MCC Pilotlog directory on the new computer, replacing the newly installed Database folder.

7-  Repeat Step 5+6 for the Pictures subfolder if you have made webcam pictures of your fellow pilots.

How to switch to the new Windows Vista-7 compatible software ?
(applies to Vista-7 users that have downloaded / installed the software before December 2009)

We have made a number of changes to our software to make it compatible with Windows Vista and Windows 7. These changes are incorporated into the new installation program. Users that have downloaded / installed our software before December 2009 (or, actually November 23th) on a Vista-7 computer are encouraged to switch to the new software.

Transition to the new Vista-7 compatible software requires a new installation of the application. The reason behind this is the location of the application. On Windows 2000-XP computers, the entire application is stored in the  C:\Program Files\  directory, while on Vista-7 computers, major part of the application is located in  C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\.

Before going through the re-install process, verify that the MCC Pilotlog folder is not present in the users application data folder. Copy and paste this link  C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\  into the Windows Explorer address bar. If the MCC Pilotlog folder is displayed, your application is already Vista-7 compliant.

If not, go through the following steps to switch-over to the new Windows Vista-7 software. Contact the Help Desk for any assistance.
